Caramel Apple Crumb Cake
Salted Caramel Sauce:
1 cup sugar
6 tbsp butter
1/2 cup + 1 tbsp heavy cream
Pinch of flaky sea salt
Caramelized Apples:
3 tbsp butter
2 large apples, sliced
3 tbsp brown sugar
3/4 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
Pinch of salt
Cake:
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 large egg
1/3 cup milk
3 tbsp sour cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 and 1/3 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Pinches of allspice and cloves
3 tbsp brown sugar + 1 tbsp cinnamon (for cinnamon sugar layer)
Crumb Layer:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 tbsp granulated sugar
1 and 1/3 cups flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Instructions:
Make salted caramel sauce by melting sugar, then whisking in butter and cream. Set aside to cool.
For apples, cook slices with butter, sugar, and spices until softened. Set aside.
Cream butter and sugars for cake, mix in egg, milk, sour cream, and vanilla. Blend in dry ingredients.
For crumb layer, melt butter, mix in sugars, flour, cinnamon, and salt until crumbs form.
Assemble cake with batter, cinnamon sugar, apples, then crumb topping. Bake at 350°F for 36-42 minutes.
Serve with salted caramel drizzle.
